Window Covering Options for French Doors

When deciding on a window treatment for your french doors, it is important to think of the door as a window, which happens to be in a door. For consistency, it is usually best to use the same products as those already on windows in that room. There are many options to choose from, it depends on your style and function of the room. A few things to consider before ordering are if you are needing privacy or wanting to block out light?

If you prefer to control light, some good choices are a roller or honeycomb (cellular) shade. Old-fashoned roller shades have a new look with beautiful fabrics. They fit on almost any shaped window, are easy to operate, and provide great light control and privacy. If you don't need privacy, choose fabrics that are sheer or open woven.

Roman and Bamboo shades are also good choices if you like the diverse look of those types of shades. You can have a room darkening liner sewn on the backside of the shade to help control light if you are needing light control.

A light filtering shade will gently filter in natural light, yet offer you the privacy you desire. Honeycomb (cellular) shades come in light filering as well as blackout.

You can also use wood blinds and mini blinds which can help filter light and give you the privacy you need.

Another option for french doors are plantation shutters, though an expensive choice, they will add value to your home.

There are a few things to note before ordering your window coverings for your door:

•Window coverings for the door will be hung on the door, not inside a window encasement, therefore, you will need to order the shade or blind as an outside mount.

•Whichever type of shade or blind you are ordering it is important to note that the shade or blind will not interfere with the door knob or lever. This is especially true with blinds.

•The tilt and lift controls are better suited on the side with the hinges to avoid them being closed in the door.

•It is common to use spacers (for proper clearance) and hold down brackets at the bottom so your blind or shade won't flop around as the door opens and closes. The product can be easily removed from the bracket whenever you want to raise it. Hotblinds provides spacers and hold downs with all door blinds.
