Tips For Cleaning Window Blinds
It sounds like an easy task, cleaning your blinds, but if you've ever done it you know it can be time consuming! Depending on the type of blinds you have depends on what method you use to clean them.
Faux Wood Blinds
Faux wood blinds are more durable than real wood blinds, hence they are easier to clean. Dusting between each slat of the blind will remove surface dirt and dust that accumulates. Feather dusters or a soft dry cloth as well as synthetic dusters can be used for this. Another good tip is to use an old sock on your hand as a dusting mitt. A vacuum with the brush attachment is another method that can be used.
A big positive of faux wood blinds is that they can be cleaned using water. You can spot clean these blinds with a cloth or sponge moistened with lukewarm water. Do not use hot water for cleaning blinds it could damage the integrity of your blind. If necessary, you can use a liquid dish soap when spot cleaning. You may also find it is easier to clean your blinds if they are removed from the window.
If the blinds are in need of a good cleaning you can wash faux wood blinds in a bath tub with a mild detergent. This shouldn't be done that often, only in extreme cases. (Please check with your blind manufacturer before doing this type of cleaning)
Real Wood
Care needs to be taken when cleaning real wood blinds. You can clean stain-finished wood blinds just as you would a nice piece of furniture in your house, with lemon oil or a wood preservative. If they're painted then stick to a wood-safe, detergent spray and a soft cloth. Water should not be used to clean your real wood blinds.
The key with blinds is to stick with regular light dusting to avoid build up, and you can keep your blinds clean with little effort.
